Great - is there a master Famicom list somewhere for official Famicom GG codes?  I can use my GG + converter + Famicom game. :P I think. :-\

I have the manual with tons of codes, but now you mentioned that I think there's no japanese names on it. I must check.

JQM: Yeah, a GG plugged into an adaptor plugged into a Famicom cart works, I just tried it. Since all the GG does is change the values of some variables in RAM (# of lives, etc) it works on all games the same way, NES or Famicom, with the same codes.

I was taking a closer look at that box. Did you notice it's got pics of the Genie being used with a 72-pin cart on an NES? That's strikes me as something piraters would do, considering that it wouldn't be a good marketing strategy to show it as 72-pins if it's for 60-pin games. ???

I notice that yeah, it's on my review for the site plus the extra book with CODES for Pirate Multi-cart games. Weirrrrrrrrrrrd.

My guess is that The Famicom Gamegenie is unlicensed, but not pirated. The reason for the box being the same could perhaps have to do with laziness and cost effectiveness. Only the name Galoob would need to be changed, so everything else could stay the same. Who knows though. Galoob doesn't exist anymore.

If you copy the overall design -- the pics, the box, the manual -- and the arrangement of the codes, that pretty much makes it a pirate. Actually, I think that would be the definition of pirated.

Interesting that it's got multi-cart codes. That seems like a sure sign it's pirated...maybe the same company hocking pirated multis was selling this alongside the multis. Realtec is known for selling existing games under the Realtec name.

I just received a Famicom Genie -- no code book :'( -- and I'm thinking it's legit. It's a very high quality product. It's got "Made in Taiwan" on the back, as well as Realtec Corp. Mine came straight from Taiwan, but it's got both English and Spanish on the back. No Chinese. I'm guessing it was released in Taiwan, but not widely, intended for distribution to English- and Spanish-speaking countries.

I think I'm beginning to understand why the code book includes codes for pirate games. At the time, there were some very well-established pirate companies in Taiwan, and it's likely there was wide distribution of some pirate carts, with clone consoles or the like. I'd bet the Taiwanese don't distinguish between licensed and unlicensed or pirated. It's all the same to them, with some pirate companies holding more clout and being more important to the Famicom market at the time in Taiwan. Those more important companies would likely have some influence over what might be included in the code book. All of this, of course, was done away from Japan and Nintendo, and with little "official" control over it.

JC, does your game genie look the same as the one in the pics earlier in this thread?
