Hey everyone at Famicom World! Long before I signed up here, I've been working with and am a senior member of what is now the Cover Project. The Cover Project is a collaborative effort to database any and all videogame box art for the purposes of storing them in plastic protective cases instead of leaving them loose or in their original cardboard boxes.

The project was started shortly after the DS came out, when people noticed DS game cases had a spot to hold GBA games. By doing some custom scan work people began to use the DS cases to hold their GBA games. Blank cases are sold at nintendo's online store and many gamers now use this method to store and collect their favourite games.

Since then, the project has expended to feature CD based systems such as PS2, GC and Xbox games. With the finding of the very versatile Universal Media Game case which are about the size of a VHS case and are able to hold just about any cartridge based game ever made, the project expended with SNES, Genesis, N64 and most recently, NES and Intellivision games.

Problem is that for the older systems boxes are rare to come by. The older the box the fewer people have it the less likely it is we'll get a scan. I know this community is full of 8-bit gamers who collect as much as they play NES and Famicom games. I'm hoping those of you who have NES or Famicom boxes would consider scanning them for the project. NTSC or PAL, English or Japanese - anything is welcome. For those hardcore collectors, please keep in mind we're not asking you to destroy your boxes or damage them in any way, we just want scans!

If you'd like to contribute, please scan in 300dpi:
the front of the box
the back of the box
one of the sides that shows the game title or is in the best shape.

Scanning the oldest boxes is a race against time and deterioration.

The site is located here at http://www.thecoverproject.net/index.php. You can upload your raw scans for one of us to compile into cases or you can simply email me your raw scans at satoshimatrix@hotmail.com. Currently we only feature 19 NES cases so anything you guys have is much appreciated. My dream is to one day have protective cases and scanned box inserts for the hundreds of NES and dozens of Famicom games I own.

For more information please visit the forums located at the cover project.

This thread can now be used for any additional questions or comments you have, as well as a posting ground of scans anyone wants to contribute. Thank you for your time.

It's a great idea. I have too much games without box 'cause they don't have one (case: pirates). You can get scans on internet from a lot of videogames.

Right. The project is also for those who have bought their games second hand and have never seen the box art for the games they own. In the case of pirates since most of them never had commerical boxes custom work will need to be done.

What I'm basically looking for is anyone who owns NES or Famicom boxes in resonablly decent shape (they can be fixed up digitally) and of course, has a scanner. This is for everyone's benifit. Please scan and send me whatever you've got. If your interesting in learning more about Universal Media Cases, check out the cover project's forums or do a google search. For anyone planning on buying them online, make sure you buy the ones that have the SLEEVES. Without the sleeves there is noplace to put a printed insert and the cases are uselessly naked without them.

Why did you link the images like that? :D

just to give people a visual impression of what the project is all about. Of course, the scans are 300dpi and measure approximitely 11 x 7.5" when fully printed.

I'm rather surprised this thread isnt seeing much activity.. I mean I'm sure a great number of you have boxes dont you? The community needs scans of them! Please consider contributing.

Maybe the guys are planning to put box and scans in their own website. At least in our site we plan the same, as a spanish contents as magazines, pirate carts and stuff.

The thing is, I already scanned some of my boxes & uploaded them, but they were resized. :-\ I don't want to bust out my scanner again & this time scan the sides of them.  Plus, seeing as most of them are old games (Galaxian, Yie Ar Kung-Fu, Space Invaders, Tetris, etc.) they're not in the best shape they can be.

The exception is Gradius II, which I'll scan once I get going onto the review. I still need to beat the game. :-\

Send your old scans to me please. Even old scans are better than no scans. Quality isnt a major issue; photoshop can clean up a lot of damage.

PS dont feel bad about not being able to beat Gradius II. I can't beat Gradius I the easter island head level is beyond rediculous, even with a rapid fire controller.

It's more of a time concern.  Especially now with finals (& an early drill weekend) coming up.  To say my life is busy right now is an understatement.

I actually almost beat it once, but had sort of an apathy at the time - I wasn't really trying to beat it.  I just suddenly noticed I was at the end & didn't care. :-\ :-\
